Myers
Park Foundation Inc. was formed in 1980 to complement the efforts of the
Homeowners Association in preservation efforts. The Foundation is entirely
separate from the dues-paying membership organization and is managed by seven
trustees, most of whom are not members of the Myers Park Homeowners Association
Board. There are no dues, and all fund raising efforts have been through the
sale of the
Legacy
books or by donations. Since the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
organization, gifts to the Foundation are tax-deductible under IRS rules.
Legacy-The Myers Park Story
has been printed twice, and
the second edition is almost sold out. About eighteen copies are still
available: first come – first served. A few special leather bound copies are
available to persons who make a significant donation to the Foundation ($500.00
or more donation). The book sales have supported the six year tree replenishing
program undertaken in the 1990’s and the design/approval and additional cost of
the gateway/bus shelters constructed on East Boulevard near Sugar Creek.
The City
Council has elected to change their policy of repairing sidewalks with asphalt
so that new repairs will be with concrete. However, there are still places
portions of asphalt sidewalk that are not deemed dangerous, and are not on the
City’s priority list. If a homeowner wants to have cosmetic repairs made but can
not afford the full cost, the Foundation has a small fund available to assist
you.
Some of
the Foundation’s limited funds will be used to supplement the Homeowners
Association efforts to replace trees along neighborhood streets. While we are
pleased that so many neighbors participated in the volunteer contributions made
with their annual membership, the Foundation will donate a portion of the cost
of tree replacements. Homeowners desiring to make a significant contribution to
the tree replacement fund can do so through the Foundation, in order to obtain a
tax deduction.
The
Foundation was initially involved in the development concept of Queens West,
later finished by a private developer. We still have “standing” (a legal
position) in assuring that this area will always remain consistent with the
original concept and design.
The original trustees of the Myers
Park Foundation were the following:
Lyn Bond, Jr.
R. Michael Childs
E. H. Copeland, Jr.
Benjamin T. Tison III.
